John,

I picked up one of the Lindberg's PT's and am currently in the process of
converting it into Radio Controlled model of the cabin cruiser and party boat
SS Phoenix, a surplus PT boat that was modified for civilian use.

I intend to make this model detailed enough to allow it to serve both as an RC
model, and as a static model in an S-scale waterfront scene.

Interestingly, despite the fact that this model was made BEFORE servos, speed
control systems, receivers and engines were small and/or light enough to allow
for this model to be RCed, many of the compromises necessary to RC this model
have already been made by Lindberg.

One such aspect and compromise, the only one that will affect my model, is the
fact that Lindberg decided to include only 1 propeller and one oversized rudder
whereas the prototype had three rudders and three propellers. The single
rudder also comes with a long rudder shaft that brings it above the water line
and a crude stuffing box. Also, there is room for a propeller shaft stuffing
box for the single prop shaft.

Since there is not room or the weight/buoyancy for the motors and mechanisms to
power and control an additional two propeller and rudder sets, it is necessary
to compromise and power only the central propeller and rudder. This
necessitates that the central rudder be a little oversized, but not quite as
oversized as Lindberg made it. Also, Lindberg didn't include the other two
propellers and rudders in any way shape or form. I intend to include these
features, but make them non-functioning and as hydrodynamically non-disruptive
as possible.

While I've done a little work on this model, specifically installing the
propeller shaft stuffing box at the same time as I was installing the stuffing
boxes in my 1:96 scale models of the USS Kearsarge, CSS Alabama, CSS
Shenandoah, and LV-112 (circa WWII), and ordering a hydrodynamic propeller (the
Lindberg one isn't), I've put this model aside until I complete the Kearsarge
and the Alabama.

After I complete the Kearsarge and Alabama, I intend to finish this model,
effectively creating an RC S-scale boat.
