Hi Chris. The answer is very simple... Lionel... They have made several scale
steam engines lately and they have a new scale Challenger coming. They also
have a new U33c due very soon. The rumors that I hear is that they will be
making even more new S scale product down the road. Their prices are MUCH
lower than brass. I don't want to spend $3000 for a brass Challenger, but $850
is doable. Also, RailSounds has superior sound quality to any DCC Sound system
on the market. Lionel knows how to do sound and that is HUGELY important to
me. Coming from O gauge 3 rail I miss RailSounds. Another thing is that the
brass steamers do not even have a smoke unit... That is another big problem for
me. Steamers need smoke. So I would totally disagree with your statement that
"everything of quality in S is available with scale wheels". Lionel is
including scale wheels on their U33 so perhaps in the future they will do more
of that, but they will never abandon the larger flange wheels. So if I want to
run any of their products I need to have track that will accommodate. Lionel is
a major player in the model train market and if they want to they can produce
much more new product than any of the other S gauge companies for the
foreseeable future, and as I mentioned before they can do it at a lower cost
with the best sound system on the market for any scale. Hope that clears it up
for you. Since you are also new to S, I recommend that you give them a look
and listen before you dismiss them. Bottom line is that while I love scale but,
I WANT to run these new Lionel models so I need to plan for that as a common
denominator.

Regards,
Jonathan

Jonathan,

As someone new to S, I don't understand why you would even consider building
trackwork to accommodate a wheel profile that is some 50 years out of date?
Essentially everything of quality in S is available with scale wheels. Why not
just build to scale and cover yourself for today and for tomorrows models?
