To add somewhat to this conversation...we have one member who has a
small home layout that consists of AF run by AC current, some SHS with
their LocoMatic and some Lionel with their control/sound system. To
enjoy all three he has three individual power/control/sound systems.
IMHO that would take most of the fun away from just running trains
after a long work day.

He has recently purchased a DCC sound equipted AM RS-3 and a few cars to
run on our modules It's much simpler than all those incompatible or
obsolete systems, not to mention the rail size issue, the frog issues,
and the flanges themselves.

Another member who has a DCC Hi-rail layout purchased a Lionel Mike. He
ended up gutting the unboard system so he could run it--what a waste of
money.

When I returned to the fold in the late 70's, I had thought that the AF
stuff had gone entirely into the woodwork or collector's shelves. I
suppose the demand and hence--big dollars have brought all this stuff
back. I had spent my teen years modifiying all my AF the best I could
plus I added a few kit built cars hopefully to never deal with E units &
jack-knifed tagloo couplers again.

So I guess this debate will go on forever, but I've personally left all
that go over 40 years ago!
