Darrell, that's correct. Both the cover plate and the gear box metal 
seem to have black paint (or anodized paint) on them and nothing seems 
to have been worn off.

I'm glad I found the short, too, but it just surprises me why it would 
work in the first place, and why it would go from working for 6 hours at 
a show to not working the moment I got home.

Anyway, I put a thin layer of liquid electrical tape on the bottom of 
the gear box, let it dry, and then re-installed the bottom plate. It 
seems to work now, but I'll have to see how long that lasts.
