Hi Andre, The locals can give you more but I've spent some time in dunsmuir
and found it a great train watching area. The trains are climbing all the way
from the Sacramento valley up to dunsmuir but since they put the turntable and
yard at Dunsmuir my guess is the grade steepens there. The curvature also
increases above the town, Cantara loop a few miles up was where the SP dumped a
car full of chemicals in the river about 20 years ago which really impacted the
tourism for the town as the river is a great attraction. Up a ways farther is
Mt. shasta city where the connection to the Mccloud lumber line comes in and
farther up the split to the cascade line going toward roseburg(now Corp I think
unless they sold it )and the ex SP line to klamath falls. The line towards
roseburg has some steep climbs so they probably left the helpers on going that
way but the line to klamath falls looks fairly mild so they probably removed
the helpers going that direction(the Klamath falls line might not have been
there at the TOC, have to check SP history to find out).
Just impressions I got from looking around the area.Lots of train traffic still
these days, at least there was before this recession started, I haven't been up
there for a few years.....DaveBranum
