I did not know latex paint would allow moisture in until I read it here 
recently.  Do acrylic paints have the same characteristic?  How about if you 
use a Latex primer such as Kilz?
To Thorin's question, I seal all wood kits.  If the colors allow, I start with 
a light coat of primer, hot rod red or light grey whichever is better for the 
top coat.  A new technique I have used is to stain the wood with art pens, this 
is particularly great when doing windows as there is no build up. I then seal 
the wood after with the clear overcoat, Dullcote or Matt Medium.  Even if I 
prime the wood structure, I seal the top surface just in case.
