Oil based paints also let moisture in otherwise planked wooden boats would
never swell up their seams. The only way to really keep moisture out of wood is
to mummify it with epoxy saturation or similar method.
As for the lasting qualities of latex paint I wouldn't sweat it on something as
simple as a train layout. I have a small drop of latex interior semi gloss
paint on the floor of my tile shower that's been there ever since I last
painted the ceiling maybe 5 or more years ago and it's withstood daily showers
and routine cleaning all this time. I noticed it soon after painting but was
curious how long it could hold on to the slick tile...DaveBranum
