Welcome Brian to S scale!  I am newer too.
I must say, wife and I went to Scenery Unlimited's open house last Saturday and
we were fortunate to meet Don H and crew, plus several new S gaugers from IL.
I was quite excited that all this new blood is into S.
Then, come Friday, S Fest in St. Louis...
It (S scale) is a very friendly family and lots of great people and advice.  I
feel very much like I've come home.

Brian,

Welcome to the wonderful world of "S"! I'll second the comment about how well
SHS locomotives run. I have four of their Consolidations and operators from all
scales comment on both their exceptional appearance and performance...and their
rolling stock is superb. But so is the equipment from American Models, the
second of the major rolling stock manufacturers. And there are many other
manufactures, as you have discovered. Great models can be 'bashed' from old
American Flyer car bodies when exactly what you want/need isn't available...add
appropriate details, new trucks and couplers, etc. I've been modeling in "S"
for many years and have built a website with photos of both my layout and the
prototype I model that might be of interest. Go to
www.buffalocreekandgauley.com and click on my name on the 'Model Railroads'
navigation bar. I have also recently published a book on my modeling effort,
available on the website, that may provide some ideas. Again,
 welcome to the family!
