I've had several request for the type of camera that I used to make the
Youtube video of the Kaw Valley Railroad at track level. I'm sure there are
a number of camcorders that would do the same job quite nicely. I picked up
a camcorder, on sale, at "Big Lot's" for $39.95 + tax. The name on the
camcorder was "Jazz" Model No. HDV180, a HD 12 mega pixel camera. It
measures 5" long x 21/2" high x 2" wide. For 40 bucks, I wasn't sure if it
would even work at that price. Needless to say, I was in for a nice
surprise. The first video was shot from a flat car being pushed by one of
BTS MA-PA 2-8-0. In the second video, I put the engine up front with 2 flat
cars, and set the camera in a low side gondola car (to give it a little
height). This camera won't shoot much closer that about 12 - 14 inches. The
camera has a flip-out -screen and it has to be in the close position while
filming a shot on the layout, at track level. So, the flip screen has to be
closed and camera off while setting it in the car. Than you have to turn on
the camera, and then push the record button and off you go. Although a
camera like this would be suitable for O scale, I don't think it would work
well with HO because of the size.
