Jim's idea is really a good one because the rolled metal goods can be
hung without sagging.
Back when I was building my layout so many years ago, I used double
tempered masonite. My boss at the time bought a ton of it as it's used
for photo mounting (the reason for the double tempering) for next to
nothing, so it was easy for me to borrow some. I countersunk holes to
match the studs ; I later used sheetrock mud to cover over. The joints
were covered with just Scotch magic mending tape. I did the corner
coving when my wife was pregnant--she would just push against the corner
and I would screw in a few screws. Over the years a few of the screw
holes plugs have popped out. Filling them isn't a problem but finding
matching paint is. The seams are visible if you really study the area.
I used solid 4 x 8 sheets in most places.
I don't know if my method is any better than others, but it's been okay.
