I'm coming a little late to the weekend fun party, but I seldom check my
mail on weekends, 'cause I've got work to do. This weekend was the
crunch weekend because my layout will be on our NMRA/San Jacinto MRR
Club's open house this coming weekend. So if any of you happen to get
stuck in Houston because of some nasty snow storm, earthquake, flooding
or whatever; please stop by and run some trains. This year I'm the only
S layout open, in the last several years a very well done Sn3 layout was
also open but he's taking a break. At one time we had five S layouts
open, three standard and two sn3, but times change.

I finally got all my main control panel and it's adjoining DCC system
functioning the way it should. However, I did have to replace one twin
coil machine, one slow motion machine on sidings. I do have one
seemingly re-occuring problem. I have a lift bridge that holds my
mainline and a switching lead that has needed adjustment several times.
To complicate matters, all the trackage is curved to the upper 30's
radii. This year is no exception, probably due to our year long
drought. Soil conditions in our area are such that it expands and
contracts, gets soft and then very hard. Most homes are built on slabs
that shift with these soil conditions and being my RR in on the second
story additional things come into play. Anyway I had to remove the
bridge and sand away some material to get it right. It's always
desirable to have a snug fit, but this was in a severe pinch to the
point the rails didn't line up. This is a walk through to reach a major
section of the railroad, so visitors will frequently raise the bridge
for access, so it has to work correctly. At this point all my engines
run through the trackage now except for my SD-9, so a little more work
is in order. I've dusted all the buildings and vehicles that I could
reach, started cleaning tracks and then rerouted some of my DCC control
wires.

I've also gathered some of those--cars in progress that have been on the
layout awaiting more work. Sometimes they've been around for some time,
so one forgets they need lettering, or additional paint work.
