I switched to "S" scale in 2005 at age 47, after "blowing a fuse" over space
limitations of 2-rail "O" scale for home layout. It was based upon three
factors:
1. seeing Don Thompson at Jersey Central terminal in Liberty State Park over a
decade earlier and every year since at York PA;
2. introduction by a friend to a friend who was a member of Central Jersey "S"
Scalers, and
3. answer to inquiry about availability of "S" scale models by Ed Loizeaux on
this Yahoo group.

Didn't read Railroad Model Craftsman, but heard of NASG (2-rail "O" scalers
talked with envy due to their lack of similar organization).
It was the size that attracted me, but it was the membership that convinced me
to take the plunge, a decision I do not regret.

My advice to every member is to be mindful and talk POSITIVE about "S" scale.
Low production kits are not a deterent to older modelers looking for a
challenge.
