Nice job, Bill!

Jim, those trains we ran used straight DC for power. The placement of the
helper locomotives 2/3rds of the way back in the train was according to Santa
Fe practice for helper units at the time. The objective was to have the helpers
shove some of the cars ahead of them while pulling the remainder of the train,
thus keeping coupler stress to a minimum, and preventing "stringlining", etc.,
on curves.

On Santa Fe at the time, remote consists could be controlled separately or in
"MU" mode. The latter is what we used on the trains we ran on DC.

Further, the remote consist was always slightly less powerful than the lead
consist, to prevent the possibility of "buckling" a train. Undulating
territory, unless exceptionally severe, was not an issue, since the slack on
the cars ahead of the pushers ran in and out as the grade, or loading, changed,
as you and I observed by adding and removing weight the the open cars in the
train.
