Apparently nobody has any of those engines, or was willing to look into
one regarding my derailment problems. Two evenings ago while
rearranging motive power, I did get into the trucks. I was correct in
that the middle axle area is different than axle one and three. The
sideframes are cast with recesses to hold the six coil springs. The
outside holes are deeper than the middle ones. So if one were to make
the assumption that American Models used the same springs on all the
axles the middle axle would be sprung more stiffly than the outside
axles. This would cause the rocking motion and resulting derailments
that I'm experiencing in some places.
To correct this situation, I imagine using softer spring or springs with
fewer coils might solve the problem. Another solution might be to file
down the bearing blocks the same relative difference of the spring
holes. I'm not certain why all this needs to be considered--perhaps I'm
missing something here!
