I too use foam core for mock ups. In one instance the scale-size mock up demonstrated to me that I'd have to compress the building a little to keep it from crowding the scene. Rather than turf the mock-up after I'd constructed the permanent building, I covered it with brick and shingle building papers printed from my computer, fitted some doors and windows, and ended up with a good-looking, low cost structure. I'll be doing more of this in the future. I can vouch for the solidity of foam core buildings.

That's fantastic! I have "built" five foam mock-ups now, plus a handful of backdrop stand-ins. I have about three of four more structures to build, and then I was going to go back and add some fake windows, doors, etc. just to add to the effect. Your idea of using brick paper would really add an extra touch to them. This is the first time I'm using this method. I've already learned that a two-story foreground factory caused it to act as a view-block to a good part of my layout, so I just chopped off the first floor and now I can see what I want to see. I also was going to make one spur lead to another factory, but it would prevent me from switching cars in the back of the layout, so that spur is now going to be a team track. I'm really enjoying this 3D planning. - Peter.
