Yes to both questions. The Iowa Central came about as a "temporary" solution
until I could embark on The Big Dream. Actually, after reading my own article,
I began to wonder to myself why I didn't build it instead of the lifetime
project I had embarked upon, i.e., trying to build something on the magnitude
of an extensive HO layout in S.

After I had to tear that effort down and move, when I began to build SHABBONA
again, I used the Iowa Central as a "prototype" and based the new layout on it,
adding a little to it to reflect the increase of equipment I had accumulated.
By this time also, I had moved the locale from Illinois to SE Iowa and had
conscripted the old Rock Island "K&D" line for my mentor.

The K&D, as originally built, actually did extend right up through the center
of Iowa to Minnesota, thus Iowa Central would have been an appropriate road
name if I hadn't been so far along with "SHABBONA", sort of like John Allen
mused that he sometimes wished he had chosen a name for his railroad other than
"Gorre & Daphetid".

The Lowell & Southern article in the latest NASG Dispatch is another good
example of "coulda' done, woulda' done, shoulda' done" if my model railroading
abilities had not been so advanced (in my own eyes)
