   Hi John, I have a problem assembling N scale so I use an optivisior for the 
small stuff. Have you looked into some type of magnification? 
   As for assembling the S scale  KD's I have some photos in the photo section 
( assembling KD couplers album)  showing how to cut a notch in a piece of wood 
to make an assembly jig. It's a lot easier to get the spring in if the coupler 
is held down in a stable position. I've used KD in sizes from O to N and find 
the S scale versions are the nicest to work with as they are big enough to 
handle easily and also include a set of mounting screws which is a nice touch
