I have been using Proto Max Couplers with the same success as 802's for not
quite a year now. Discovered them through this web site while cursing the web a
while back.

The only issue I have is the two side mounting holes don't quite line up ...I
solved this by boring out the holes with a small file ever so slightly
...presto perfect fit. Since the centering spring is a flat piece of metal that
fits into the coupler box it doesn't jump out across the room when assembling.
Also there is no accordion action at the end of the train like on the 802's.
The coupler it's self is metal not plastic ...which I like better. The thing
that sold me was the cost per car comes down considerably compared to doing the
same number of cars with 802's (I was coming out just over a dollar a car
...compared to $2.50 to $3 a car with 802's depending on if I could get a good
deal when I bought my 802's) I have 100+ S Helper cars that still need switched
out ....so the price sealed the deal for me.
