Gents...

I once had an unhappy train ride. A steam engine was promised, but a diesel
was used. I wrote a letter to the President of the RR and he sent me back a
gift certificate good for a free ride of equal value with a steam engine. I
was happy with that arrangement.

Years later, I had another unhappy train ride when the dining car ran out of
food. I wrote a letter to the President of VIA (Canada) and he called me up
and we spoke for half an hour. The end result is that I now have a half-price
ride available to me upon request. Have not used it yet, but I will.

I have written letters to the CEO of several large companies and even to the
Director of the Social Security Administration (SSA) and have received total
satisfaction in response. The SSA actually revised their computer software to
solve the problem that was affecting my wife's monthly check. I would never
send an email to some lower ranking clown as a way to make an important point.
The low clown then has to convince the middle clown who then has to approach
the real decision maker, aka CEO, and confess to being wrong. Totally worthless
way to spend time.

Lots of folks write emails to Yahoo Groups, but how many of them have actually
written a genuine letter on paper to the CEO of Lionel and sent it via
Registered Mail? I will venture that not one single person has done that. No
wonder nothing ever changes!

Most every serious businessman that I know, or have read about, will bend over
backwards to keep 10% of his customers happy. GM and Ford do it to keep
Californians happy with our stricter-than-national smog and gas mileage
requirements. AM and SHS do it to keep the scale guys happy. Overland Models
has produced O scale brass steam engines with optional wheelsets for the P:48
crowd (which is pretty miniscule -- less than 10%).

So why are we writing gripe messages to a Yahoo Group? Darned if I know.
Makes no sense.

Merry Christmas to all......Ed L.
