This was an off-list message, but my response might be of interest to all.

No, just like if you go buy a new loco with DCC they don't give you a DCC
control center.

So do they start out with AC track power and then convert to DC within the
circuit boards?

Since my previous message I put my BN loco on 3 ft of AM flex, connected an
ancient Lionel "Type 1040" transformer to it, and ran it back & forth. I
presume it's just like an AM loco in that AC or their non-NMRA "DCC" signal
gets rectified and controlled to go to a DC motor. I doubt anyone makes AC
motors any more. I haven't opened it up yet.

It was impressive to see all the lights, white to the direction of travel
and red to the other end. Lots of sound too, but a little erratic, though
on 3 ft of track I obviously couldn't get the full benefit of distance
running. Maybe tonight at a friend's home.

Also, FWIW, it has a snow plow in the front, 6 MU hoses at each end,
windshield wipers on front and rear of cab, and a crew. If I read the
manual right, even in plain AC (with horn & bell control à la AM 2-button
box), there should be crew talk. I'm anxious to see if that works and if I
can see the little guy's mouth move when he talks.

I have not yet discovered "rake" or erroneous slope on nose. There is a
funny slope though on the deck of the front pilot, but I'll live with it.
