John,

As far as I know AR&M is still in business; it is just up for sale.

I can get it locally at our full-service MRR hobby store, and it is regularly re-stocked.

As for the art sand, I bought mine at Michaels. They have several colors. I bought the black to represent coal. It has a slight shimmer to it, which I think adds to the coal look-alike. If that bothers you, you can spray it with Testors Dullcoat, for example. You can see the material on this page (was kind of hard to photograph):

I have a bag of AR&M "Earth", part #1090, which is very fine, medium-brown color. I use it for exposed scenery base areas.

Enjoy,
 - Peter.

Me? I've been working on the Castle Rock canyon area...trackage to be about 60ft. aboe the river/road. Gonna be a good looker when it's done. Hey...I'm looking for sandy soil. The kind you find in the west, dry, sandy soil. Woodland Scenics "earth" really doesn't do it. I'm kinda thinking maybe Hobby Lobby or Michaels might have something.
Arizona Rock used to have great stuff but I think they're out of business.
