G'day Roberto'......

I am not certain one design is better than the other. Both concepts should, in
theory, work just fine. The main problems I have discovered over the years is
that the wheels of the pilot touch (short out) against the steam chest. Or,
the wheelbase of the pilot truck is way too short for clearing the steam
chest. Once these are fixed, either method of mounting the pilot truck should
work.

The main problem with the "Overland approach" has been that sideways movement
of the pilot truck is not always smooth. It seems to catch on the screw or it
comes loose from the screw or something similar. Working and reworking the
slot, the screw, washers, spring (downward pressure) have all been needed to
get good smooth reliable operation. But once gotten, it is pretty good.

The key with any of this is to be certain there is ample freedom of movement in
the vertical (up & down) and horizontal (right & left) directions at all times.
As if that was not enough, there also needs to be freedom to tilt (right wheel
higher and/or lower) as well. With freedom to move and with downward pressure,
either mounting method ought to work fine.

The "Southwind approach" using a tongue should work OK if it is spring loaded
to apply downward presure on the pilot truck. Nothing wrong with the concept as
long as everything can move around freely.

Just an opinion.....worth what you paid for it.

Cheers....Ed L.
