Good morning:
     This is so simple to fix it is almost laughable.

Smear the inside of the cylinders with a thin coat of epoxy.  Repeat in 40 
years if necessary.

This fixed many brass On3 locomotives.  They came with (soft) factory paint so 
they ran -- for a while.  We covered the paint scratch with epoxy.  The problem 
never returned.

G'day Roberto'......

I am not certain one design is better than the other.  Both concepts should, in 
theory, work just fine.  The main problems I have discovered over the years is 
that the wheels of the pilot touch (short out) against the steam chest.  Or, 
the wheelbase of the pilot truck is way too short  for clearing the steam 
chest.  Once these are fixed, either method of mounting the pilot truck should 
work.
