On Saturday last I saw for the first time, Don MacDougall's S scale
switching layout. This is based around his Norton and Northern
railroad, with elements from the Interstate and Southern diesels doing
the switching. Whilst Don did some switching, he also had small group
to help him, who I gather weren't of the S persuasion (well not yet).
I didn't switch, but took the opportunity to be the happy snapper.
More information would have to be supplied by Don.
This layout was at a small meeting in the village hall in Benson
(south of Oxford, England), with other HO & N layouts (North American
in the main), along with traders dealing in North American models,
books and DVDs
So not a big event, but one where you could meet others with an
interest in modelling the North American railroad. Certainly I took
the opportunity to natter to many friends, from Kelvin White to guys I
first met in the late 60's. There was even a room to sit, eat, drink
and of course further chat about peoples activities, health and wonder
why they look so much older.
This is an event organised (for some years) by the British Region of
the NMRA. In Britain the NMRA is very much a means for those who want
to follow the North American railroad scene to meet others with
similar interests. Back when I first joined (Life member since 1968)
it was the main way to meet up, though since then North American
biased clubs and groups, as well traders, have greatly expanded. Don's
helpers were from the Seaboard Southern club (they have a website),
which I gather Don is a member.
Well my next show in a fortnights time and will have an S scale layout
and some S scale traders, but being the Amherst Club in West
Springfield, has to be the total opposite in floor space to last
Saturdays event! I wonder if I'll meet some old friends there as well.
