Bud...
I'm using Alclad II on the BUDD cars I've built.  You can vary the Alclad II 
finish by selecting from their various types of "silver" and/or by making the 
black undercoat primer lighter.  These cars are done using a mix of 2/3 
"Polished Aluminum" with 1/3 "Stainless Steel".  They have everything from SS 
to Chrome, including weathering colors (add "smoke" to roofs, etc.).
