My memory is weak, but what I recall is that he was a skilled machinist who
liked to build things and Shays/trains were the most mechanical thing he could
make. I seem to recall his shop area was larger than his layout. He
scratchbuilt a Shay or two and other locos that repeatedly won the BEST IN SHOW
at the annual NASG conventions. After winning several times, he stopped
entering so as to give other fellows a chance. He was a quiet fellow and not
after glory and fame. Ed L.
