Jim,

I recognize that spot from my days riding my chrome-fendered Hawthorne bicycle
in search of trains. That train is not very fara out of the GN station, just
minutes. You can see the tracks curving into the station even in this photo.
I have ridden my bicycle to the vantage point from which the photographer took
the photo. It's been so long since I've been up--or would it be "down"--in
that part of the city that I cannot name the street, but it is in the warehouse
district. The Washington-Plymouth-Minnehaha streetcar line, crossing Hennepin
Avenue and headed down Washington toward Broadway--did not operate far from
that street which parallels Washington Avenue. It would be one or two blocks
beyond Washington toward the CGW freight station and the GN depot. Man, does
that bring back memories. I'm not sure when the train became a mixed, perhaps
many years before that. I think it possible that on some days the NW-5 had
little to lug all the way to Hutchinson besides the combine. What a fool I was
not to take that train. It rain daily except Sunday, and I wouldn't be
surprised if on Saturday, the NW unit and the combine were the consist.

Thanks for that photo. Wow! What a memory!

Tom

Tom:
It's in the photos section, not files. See if this link works...

It would be cool on a trip to the Twin Cities to find this same spot!
