My! An animated conversation, to be sure, about the new Lionel stuff. Most of
us haven't seen it yet, so should we be criticizing? In my view, it's a good
thing whenever any outfit cranks out something in S, something that is
accurately scale, that is. That leaves behind the Flyer Baldwin switchers and
a few other Flyer items.
We can talk about availability back in the day, or we can look to the HO crowd,
and think wish we had all that stuff. Those who model in HO, however, can
crank out only one model every so often, not on a daily basis. Most of the
S-scale guys are aware of Ted Culotta's articles on this or that essential
prototype. Great, but do most of you know how many of those Ted Culotta
approved models--most of them Sunshine Models--still sit in a cupboard in
boxes? Quite a few, I'd venture.
If it's ready-to-run which seems to be the current rage, well, how many of
those ready-to=run models could we afford. For some, no doubt, whatever the
traffic will bear. But for others of us, realities, such as eating, having a
roof over the head, paying medical bills, and keeping the car repaired intrude
on the modeling world.
What am I trying to say? Nurture and encourage those who crank out something
if it is scale but may not meet your standard for detail etc. Buy what you can
afford, and HAVE FUN. Isn't that what we're supposed to be doing? I plan to
attend the Chattanooga Convention, Lord willing, but certainly not to get bent
out of shape over what Lionel's shortcomings in S might be currently.
