Research can be fun when it comes to projects like this.  For example, Texas 
did not begin putting white stripes on road before 1930.  See:

      The road looks great. I have two suggestions from a road I made. I masked 
and then airbrushed the white line, which pretty much eliminates any bleed 
under the tape. I did the same thing of running the paving material right up to 
the rails, but now I think wood crossings typically had one board outside the 
rails.
