Many a school bulletin board was made of homosote that had a thin layer
of white 'something' applied to improve it's appearance. I purchased
three sheets of homosote with a thin layer of cork bonded to the
surface. I don't know if it was intended for bulletin boards,
wall-board, or some specific sound deadening purpose--but I acquired it
on the cheep! Unfortunately it's nearly gone.
There is a beautiful and expansive HO layout being built locally and
they are using what they call Celotex. It has properties that are
nearly identical to homosote. I was told the stuff was just ceiling
tile material. I purchased a couple of 2 x 4 sheets and used it--but it
wasn't the same stuff. It doesn't hold spikes and flakes very easily.
So I think localized terminology sometimes confuses us and you mix that
up with specific brand names for more confusion.

Then it aint homosote. Color is right but the content must be paper.
Homobed is made from bleached homosote.

I'm beginning to think that homosote and homobed are different items
in different areas of the country. What is sold as homosote in this
area is a medium light gray at its darkest. Is it not a byproduct
of the paper industry as it is? DJE
