Bill:
The locomotive body is black, as is the smoke box. When I was doing all the
NYC H10 research I had the privilege of corresponding with a couple of now
deceased steam experts from the NYCSHS. One sent me a copy of the railroad's
"Specification 1207-B: Locomotive Front End Paint". The spec spent two pages
describing in great detail pigment, vehicle, flash point, hiding power, etc.
Never let it be said the railroad's weren't thorough!

That material was a mixture of graphite and very finely ground (200 mesh)
carbon black in a mineral and linseed oil base. I'd be happy to provide a copy
if you want to send me a self-addressed stamped business envelope. My POV on
the color comes directly from the specification's Scope: "This specification
covers a ready-for-brush black paint for use in painting the front ends of
locomotive boilers." It is dated July, 1947.

On tweaks to the model, each seems to have its own peculiarities but I have
found all of the Niagara's I have worked on needed to have the fire box floor
raised so it did not touch the trailing truck wheel treads on uneven track and
short out. You have to remove the motor to get to it, then install a couple of
0.015" plastic washers between the frame and fire box floor. I agree with Ed
on the radius – the Niagara is much more "comfortable" on 46"+ radius curves –
especially curves employing spiral easements. I installed a LokSound decoder
with the N&W "J" sound file – pretty awesome. Just needed to adjust to a Wabco
E-2 air horn for the Niagara – but that is another story...

Sorry for the lengthy and late response, been traveling all week and just
catching up...
