Yeah, the alternate to using concrete to blunt it is turn the nail upside down 
and whack the point with your hammer then turn it right side up and drive it. 
The blunted point leaves little sharp edges that cut the wood fibers when 
driven thru instead of spreading them and the spot where you hit it upside down 
leaves a crushed circle of wood fibers to accept the head as it snugs
