And I don't suspect you ever will have any issues with the SHS gear box on the
ore cars, Ken... they are almost perfect for each other.
But here is something that most people don't know - SERGENT couplers WILL work
in the SHS gear box with a little work... AND... they will even center using
the centering spring that comes with the SHS gear box!
I used one of my pilot models of the forthcoming, new SERGENT coupler in this
experiment...
The coupler shank is too thick (or the gear box is too thin... however you want
to look at it), so the shank requires a fair amount of filing (on top)... and
widest points of the coupler's shank require a very slight amount of filing...
but once done, it actually works like it was made for it.

Subject: {S-Scale List} SHS couplers and ore cars
While Don will have the full answer, but I recall the couplers were designed
to fit the F units and give them closer coupling. Being able to have the same
close coupling on the ore cars was accomplished using the SHS couplers. Note
that Don created a new truck with the prototypical correct wheel base for this
truck. It is tight down there as it is on the real thing. I have never tried
Kadee couplers on my string of ore cars, I have never had an issue with the SHS
coupler on the cars.
