Dave....
One solution to the problem of trip pins tangling with diesel pilots is to use
"reverse trip pin" couplers such as those sold by Walther's in HO. Instead of
the trip pin extending outward (and hitting the pilot), it curves under and
beneath itself and bends back toward the draft gear box.
When coupling to the diesel, use only the cars with a reverse trip pin.
Problem goes away and the magnets work just as well. Picks too.
Of course, with this solution, not every car could be coupled to the diesel --
unless you used reverse trip pin couplers on all cars which would not look very
realistic. After all, those air hoses went the other way.
