Hi Dave --
You didn’t say what size CFLs you will be using, or how far from the layout
surface. Even the lowest power CFL puts out a lot of light. I would do
some testing as to how intense you want your lighting to be.
So, the best I can do is relate my personal experience. I recently
switched to “daylight” CFLs in the trainroom. The light is more harsh than
the “warm” CFLs that mimic incandescent’s color, but it keeps my sky blue
and takes a better photo. My lights are in cans in the ceiling, ten pretty
evenly spaced over the layout on about 4-1/2 foot centers. The ceiling is
about 5 above the layout. By the time the light gets to the layout
surface it is pretty even, but near the top of the backdrop there are
obvious bright/dark areas. Most of the CFLs are 60 watt equivalent, but a
couple are 75 watt where the layout is lowest (farthest from the light) and
widest (at the corners). I also have a room fan with four lights in the
center of the room that I will probably use to fill those darker areas of
the backdrop by using mini spotlights.
I would probably run a bus wire pair and connect each socket individually to
the bus. I realize you are working with 110 AC, so some precautions should
be taken (“suitcase” connectors?) to prevent shocks.
Good luck!

anyone have experience with CFL lights in porcelain lampholders mounted in a
lighting valence? I'm thinking about mounting them about 1.5 to 2 feet apart
and was wondering if that spacing sounds about right and also what is the
best way to gang wire a run of them? ...DaveBranum
