Dave:

I've been using 26-watt CFL's space from 3 to 4 feet apart for several years. 
These are the equivalent of 100-watt incandescent bulbs. They are in porclain 
bases as you describe,  and I have wired them in parallel so that when one 
burns out, it doesn't darken the entire run.

I do not have a finished ceiling in my basement, either
