The space needed for electronics is part of the reason for vertical motors.
The other part of the reason is that U-joints do not perform well on very
sharp curves.  Apparently the locos do not run smoothly around sharp curves
because of the sharp angles the U-joints must accommodate.  With motors
mounted on the trucks, there are no U-joints and smoother operation around
sharp curves is much better.  Or so I am told...
