The best gyralights I've ever seen were made by Leonard Ruback, for DC locos.
His
lamp control had a capacitor that "ramped up" then "flashed" and "ramped
down" the
intensity of the bulb -- this almost perfectly captured the way a gyralight
looks when you
are looking at it, because just as the lamp lines up with your line of sight
you get a sudden
and intense flash of light, but when the lamp points away from you it is not
nearly as
  bright.

Some engines especially RTR from Proto 2000 had terrible simulations --
basically they
used two bulbs alternating on/off -- Ugh! DCC Fx decoders are better than
that but none
of them is as good as Leonard's. At least none that I've seen so far.

What is the state of the art now regarding dual-beam headlights and
gyralights on model passenger engines. The cover jacket of the new "Rock
Island in Minnesota" book shows best what one could wish for.
