Hi all --
A quick check of my Rio Grande Diesel books shows that the Rio Grande F
units had one or two lights in the upper bezel and as many as SEVEN in the
lower bezel, though as the units aged these numbers changed and so did the
color. Later shots show one large light or two smaller ones in the upper,
and most of the lower were two. The oscillating lights were generally in
the upper housing. The Rio Grande had no E units.

I don't know about the F and E units as SP never ran them here on the branch
so I didn't get to play on them. The upper light on the F's and E's might
have been a combination light something like the large barrel shaped lights
on some switchers and early road switchers? or it might just be big enough
to have the three lights spaced around it??
Somehow the barrel lights mechanically switched from white to red when the
loco was stopped on the main or in other warning situations. I can't recall
seeing one apart but when one switched they looked like they did it with
some kind of hinged sections or internal dividers.For a while back in 1957
or 58 an SD7 lead freight would stop and switch the furniture factory near
my house and I recall watching the light switch from white to red.
