 I've done it for freight cars to represent where new numbers and reporting 
marks were stenciled on. I printed the lettering on thin paper then applied it 
with future, a thin coat of future under the paper then apply and blot the 
excess out then add a thin coat over the paper. Try printing a numberboard and 
see if your printer can print fine enough. The cars I've done it on were O 
scale so I'm not sure if my printer could print S scale lettering and numbers 
fine enough. 
 As for the font you'd probably have to look for photos of the loco you want to 
model and see what looks the closest....DaveBranum
