No flame, but why did this list split from the S Trains EGroup? Not because the
scale modelers wanted to add one more mail list to their collection, but
because we didn't want to wade through the threads on repairing Flyer and
variations in the different models of Flyer NE cabooses. If half the members of
this group subscribed to the Modeling Guide, I'm sure Bob would be much
happier. If 10% wrote even a short article for him on something they are doing,
he probably would not be asking for material.

I do buy S Gaugian on occasion. The Scale column is good, but that alone
doesn't make the magazine worth the price to me unless the subject is directly
applicable and the information not available elsewhere. The articles on the
prototypes for the Gilbert AF were well done and helpful in converting them to
prototypical models. Otherwise, I generally get more use out of articles in MR
or RMC.

Someone else commented here that an S Scale modeler has more in common with
modelers in other scales than with the typical Flyer collector/runner. That is
not intended as a "knock" on anyone. Whatever hobby someone wants to pursue is
great, and I can generate some mild interest in seeing what they do and talking
about it with them. That said, I don't subscribe to magazines for hobbies in
which I don't participate.

The first two e-zine format versions of the Modeling Guide are very good, with
stuff of use to most people here be it on layout construction or building
passenger cars. The only real downside is that it can't very well be placed in
the magazine rack at the local hobby shop to (maybe) catch the eye of a
potential convert. I suspect that wasn't happening anyway, so it's a minor
loss.
