  Hi Dave, I think it's just an awareness of what can be done with materials 
that we develop over years of modeling. We see the parts and visualize the 
finished product.
  Of course a lot of it is opportunity. I started modeling in HO scale when I 
was 11 years old with supportive parents. My dad was an auto mechanic who also 
built our house in his spare time, my mom was an artist with cloth and 
ceramics. As I got older I built go-karts, race cars,boats,furniture,re-modeled 
and added on to my house, built a workshop, etc. so it's a progression of 
building experience.
 It also helps to have a large storage space and some free time to re-purpose 
the stuff one collects....DaveBranum
