Hi Don,
Ah, ha!!! That explains a lot! It looked like the small board above the
door had two "lights", but I guess they are the connector pin/plugs. I
didn't see any LEDs there (unless they are the newer tiny SMD 603 LEDs),
so that only confused me more. These engines were before I switched to
"S", so I don't know the history or what they were capable of. Thanks
for explaining this, Don. I appreciate your time.

Dear Peter,
The small pcb at the rear (or flat end of all our F units) was
intended for the MU function where all of the motors are connected
together and get power from only one source. They could be used with
LocoMatic or DCC, but most people prefer to operate the trailing units
as part of a consist instead of a slave (using one decoder for
multiple units).
You could use these two wires for a rear light. They connect to
two pads (contacts) on the mother board (the other two are for the
speakers and they are towards the rear of the engine). You would need
to find these two contacts and isolate them electrically from the
motor (cutting the copper paths that would go to the motor sockets 1 &
5. I would use a small jumper to get the common (socket 7) and rear
headlight (socket 2) to one of the ex-MU pads. Remember, the bulbs in
the F units are all 5 volt. If you plug a decoder in the socket, you
will blow the headlight.
