I'll differ with both of you guys. I don't mind the fireman doing his
thing--heck you need to get up a head of steam somehow. And if you model
the PRR you'll need him, since that regressive RR didn't use stokers!
But it makes sense to turn off the guy-give him a rest if you're oil
fired or your engine has a working stoker. I don't use the fireman
filling the tender with water nor the lube gun effect. Of course that's
the advantage of programing things in the first place. The Tsunami has
come a long way from the earlier version, of which I have several.
Next the playable whistle/horn... Unless I'm totally wrong here, all
those buttons on the controllers are really just on/off switches. so
the only playable part of those two effects is the duration of the
sound and not all those other components that make up "sound". This
was a feature that the PFM sound systems had down pretty well that I
don't think has been duplicated.
I had the old #1 version for a few years along with three engines with
speakers. The whistle was basically a rheostat controlled by a lever so
the operator had unlimited control over that feature. Other knobs
(rheostats again) controlled the sounds just like a stereo amp. The
actual engineer had a whistle cord that he would vary to make his unique
sound. Diesels have a lever that does most of that especially with the
multi-chime versions. I remember Billy Click operating my layout one
time and he made that thing really 'sing'. When the train was in a
distant tunnel he used just a little sound and as she arrived in the
viewing area he played it a bit louder.

Bill, I did play around with the "playable whistle" and didn't care
much for it. I hope your experience is better

There are a number of thing I do in programming a Tsunami based on my
preferences. Most of it is telling Fireman Fred to “sit down and shut
up”. I really hate the cutesy sounds. I also don’t like the automatic
whistle/horn toots when stopping or starting.
