Back in the 60's nascar sanctioned all the race tracks here in central
california. I raced on oval and figure eight tracks. Started out in $99 claimer
class when I was 18 years old and then sportsman and early model stock cars
till I was about 25. Then I switched to sailing as it was a lot quieter :>)
Oldest car I recall driving was a 1938 olds coupe with a hudson hornet motor.
My favorite dirt track car was the 55-57 chevy, very tough and well handing
machine. Demolition derby cars were whatever our sponsor had in the junkyard at
the time, usually would go for the biggest heaviest thing that ran but I also
liked the old 41-47 type chevys as they had an enclosed driveshaft that was
hard to destroy when backing into cars. For the D-derby cars we'd just break
out the windows and chain up the doors and do minimal stuff to keep them from
breaking like moving the battery inside. They were disposable cars and I never
used one more than once. it was mostly just for fun not too serious as the
prize money was only a couple hundred bucks. The oval track cars were usually
good for a season or two unless they got badly tweaked, their motors hopefully
lasted one season....DaveBranum
