Bob and Dan,

I've read your e-mails with great interest. Your posts convey a feeling
excitement about the Southern Railway and its Crescent. Wish I could have
ridden it in its pre-AMTAK version. In 1968 I rode what was left of the "Royal
Palm" from Cincinnatti to Chattanooga and return. Actually, rode the old PRR
from Cinci to Chicago and the RI from Chicago to Des Moines.

Although those were dark days for passenger trains, the whole thing was an
adventure, especially on the Southern. On the way south to Chattanooga, our
train had a few mail storage cars and one rebuilt heavyweight coach. But on
the return, we had an E-7 and an FP-7 out of Chattanooga, more cars, the
rebuilt heavyweight, and a coach buffet-square-end observation car.

I sat in my coach seat and, tiring of that, I could stroll back to one of the
few lounge chairs to sit and watch the tracks recede, a very pleasant ride even
without snacks and any sodas to drink. I never knew the Southern had such a
car and wonder on what train it had once served.

Tom

cars

Bob:

The Southern Crescent was a real family affair. The crew took great pride in
their train, and even we headquarters guys took a lot of pride in that train.

I remember one night in particular, I was riding north out of Atlanta on a
Friday night, and on TV that night was the Johnny Cash train music special,
partly recorded on the Southern Crescent. After dinner in the diner, we all
gathered in the sleeper-lounge. The lounge car attendant had brought his own
portable TV, and we attempted to watch the Johnny Cash special -- constantly
manipulating the rabbit ear antennae as the Crescent rolled northward. When
the Crescent appeared on the screen, a cheer went up in the lounge car.

Good times and a great railroad.

Dan
