A few people have mentioned the "tree line," that as you near it the height and 
species of trees changes. How many railroads made it anywhere near the tree 
line? Donner Pass shows a little thinning of the trees but they look like 
they're still over 100ft tall.

In Canada, and generally as you go north, the tree line is at a lower 
elevation. Maybe if you're modelling a northern route...
