For keeping things off the floor for flood protection try using bread trays laid upside down. They will be about 4-6" in height. Get two or three and put some wood across them. Often they are damaged and are tossed by the delivery guys. Also some anti-fatigue mattes serve the same purpose in just getting things an inch or two above the floor, but they are lower. Both let air circulate and keep the area from getting moldy smelling.

For what it is worth - I have been using plastic hangers my wife was going to dispose of to shim stuff off of the basement floor, in hopes of minimizing water damage when I get water in the basement. Next move is to find some old plastic shelving that I can shim as a platform for cardboard containers and the like. My flooding problems are not nearly on a scale as Fred's, I just want a place for the water to flow freely towards the floor drain when it happens.
