Unless one has been sold, there are two Q-series locomotives on the Iowa
Interstate. The other smaller Chinese engine is on Boone and Scenic Valley at
Boone, Iowa. DJE

I think Bob W. was correct, both on these having been imported (built
new) in the 1990s, built to Chinese designs, and on the factory ceasing
production a few years later.

One has been rebuilt after a fire, with a new cab and modified tender,
as New Haven 3025

A 1/1 scale kitbash, if you will.

There is also a larger 2-10-2 Chinese steam locomotive in service on
the Iowa interstate. That may have been a surplus engine, rather than new
construction.

I think some British tourist operations have built steam locomotives
from scratch. I can't say if that is really cost effective vs. restoring some
of the old engines around the country.

I believe China no longer manufactures steam locos in 1:1 scale, but
did so into the 1990s. If I recall the Trains article correctly, the locos
shipped to North American tourist operations were built new for the buyers.
One did end up at the bottom of the ocean when the ship delivering it sank. A
tantalizing prospect at the time was the discussion about building a J series
Hudson from scratch using NYC blueprints, but in the end (possibly because the
plant itself was winding down operations) the customers had to purchase
existing designs. Too bad, because of all the extinct North American steam
loco designs deserving to be resurrected, my first nomination would be that
iconic loco.

If this is a modern steamer from China, the question is raised: how
much would it cost to have a steam loco made in China and shipped to the
USA? I'm thinking about reproductions of iconic locomotives which are
now extinct, such as the Southern Railway Ps-4.

          Hi:
          Thanks for making my day,
The engine is brand new from China. Is the SUV older or newer than
its assailant?
You couldn't make this one up!
