Correct ends (to match the SAL car) were available from Ted Culotta's operation - Speedswitch Media. He may not be operating any longer (not sure), but I managed to get some of the last of his correct ends for my two Athearn models. But such a small detail, even in S scale, would be an easy and fairly cheap option for a manufacturer to offer as an option.
Here's to hope... AAR 65'6" mill gon. Good choice. Seaboard's had postwar-type ends due to their 1949 construction date, but some earlier cars had the ends on the Athearn model.
